Microfinanse

Microfinance refers to the provision of small loans with which people start their own small business. It has proven to be an effective and sustainable tool in helping reduce poverty.

With the aid of a committed group of volunteers, some Darfuri women are participating in a microfinance project.  It consists of two parts: weekly meetings and at-home production.  At weekly meetings, the women engage in the following activities:

  • Hebrew and English lessons
  • Seminars on life in Israel
  • Understanding Microfinance
  • Business training and development
  • Extracurricular and cultural activities

Meanwhile, on their own time, women use their skills that they learned back home to make a variety of items which reflect the artistic style of their culture.   These include jewellery, bags, placemats and more.   These items are sold at a weekly stall in Tel Aviv, and at events, bringing much-needed income to the women.

This provides the refugees with a sense of personal achievement while fulfilling their desire to contribute to this country.

This project is run in conjunction with Microfy.  Microfy is a non profit microfinance organization that seeks to strengthen Israeli society by bridging the economical and cultural gaps between its different communities.  Our mission is to empower disadvantaged communities by giving them the tools they need to raise themselves out of poverty and become independent and active members of society.
